Habitat

Habitat was my final capstone project for my Media Arts and Design major. The Wildlife Center of Virginia, located in Waynesboro, VA was in need of a volunteer management system to replace their outdated paper system. Over a period of two months and working alongside one other converged media concentration student and seven Computer Information Systems students from JMU's College of Business, we developed an internal database and website for volunteers to check-in, track their miles and hours, view training requirements and sign up for shifts using an online calendar. The system also managed the volunteer application process and offered a wide range of admin functionality for team leads to manage the volunteers and the center's data. Overall the experience took us through the initial stages of contact with a client, user research and brand development, design and development and database integration. My team's project ended up ranking in the top two out of eleven teams and involved a final pitch of our system to the client and an audience of over two hundred other viewers. The final system can be viewed online here. Please contact Maddy Williams for login credentials to view the the applicant, volunteer and admin experiences.
